 Wood, Velvet and Cotton Bolls

Fall is such a hopeful time of year. We are enthusiastic that temperatures will soon begin to drop, with the soft whisper of falling leaves coming close behind. We have teams to cheer and dreams of championships ahead. Our homes are filled with the smell of chili on the stove or apples baking in the oven. And the best part for me… the colors of earth are planted in our flowerbeds and scattered indoors as throw pillows, afghans and pumpkin soup bowls.

Fall Table Setting

The warmth of a fireplace creates a cozy ambiance for snuggling and reading on the sofa. It’s a calm and relaxing season, until the holiday chaos begins. That is … except on Saturdays in the South. College football is our social life and creates opportunity for sharing good food and great times.

Fall Lanterns and Pottery

It is also a fantastic time for getting a few things done around the house, like cleaning out the gutters and raking up pine straw. 007 is the man with the golden rake! Planting mums and pansies for the colder weather and decorating to celebrate the harvest are a few things on my list each year.

Velvet Pumpkins and Placesettings

I loved the velvet pumpkins the first season they came out. So pretty!

After a full day of working, it’s such a cheerful sight to gather at a festive table and break bread together. It’s a time to bow our heads in astonishment at the wondrous bounty we’ve been blessed with over the last few months. And I love a table that represents all the things we love about Fall.

Fall Place setting

The colors of nature, leaves, wood, a harvest of pumpkins, gourds and butternut squash remind me of pilgrims with their horns of plenty. Feathers, cotton bolls, corn and pheasants help me to appreciate my own Native American heritage and the part they play in this Thanksgiving season.

DIY Fall Napkin Ring

The crunch of leaves beneath our feet, the smell of smoking chimneys and the comfort of our sweaters are instant security; even if it’s only for an hours-glass worth of time. Deadlines and the sense of urgency that we strive with daily seem a bit less burdensome, giving us a sense of calm right before Christmas.
